Used Cars: Consumers Can Check Recalls

It’s a problem we identified years ago, no system to help protect consumers when they buy used cars that have been recalled. Now that’s changing.
We are pleased to report that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced today that all major automakers and motorcycle manufacturers will be required to provide consumers with online access to recall information on vehicles searchable by VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). It is available on www.safercar.gov.
Consumers will be able to search by vehicle VIN number to determine if the vehicle is, or has been, subject to a recall and whether the vehicle has been fixed/brought into compliance.
