Injured in a car crash in St. Johns?

St. Johns is one of the fastest-growing areas in Northeast Florida. New neighborhoods, schools and shopping centers have added traffic to roads that were built for far fewer cars, and construction zones are everywhere. When a careless driver causes a crash, the costs can add up fast: medical bills, lost income and a car you can’t use.

Terrell Hogan Law has represented injured people since 1974. We handle car accident claims throughout St. Johns, Julington Creek, Fruit Cove, RiverTown, Nocatee, Ponte Vedra and the rest of St. Johns County. For other kinds of injuries in the county, see our St. Augustine personal injury page.

What to do after a crash

  1. Call 911 and make sure a police report is made.
  2. Get medical care right away, and within 14 days at the latest.
  3. If it is safe, take photos of the vehicles, the scene and your injuries, and get witness names and numbers.
  4. Do not give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurance company before you talk to a lawyer.
  5. Keep your medical bills, records and proof of missed work.
  6. Call us for a free consultation at (904) 632-2424.

Florida rules that affect your car accident claim

  • See a doctor within 14 days. Your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage pays only if you get initial medical care within 14 days of the crash.
  • PIP has limits. It generally covers 80% of medical bills and 60% of lost income, up to $10,000. It does not pay for pain and suffering.
  • Pain and suffering requires a serious injury. You can make that claim against the at-fault driver if the crash caused a permanent injury, significant scarring or disfigurement, or death.
  • The deadline is usually two years. For most crashes on or after March 24, 2023, a negligence lawsuit must be filed within two years of the crash.
  • Fault matters. Your recovery is reduced by your share of fault. If you are found more than 50% at fault, you cannot recover from the other driver.
  • Uninsured motorist coverage can save a case. Florida does not require drivers to carry bodily injury liability insurance, so your own UM coverage is often what pays.
