Raising the Bar with Matthew Sowell
In this edition of Raising the Bar, host Alan Picker sits down with Matthew Sowell, a leading attorney specializing in medical malpractice and stroke litigation in the southeastern United States. With decades of experience, Matthew has earned a reputation as a trusted advocate for those seeking justice after devastating medical outcomes. From preventing strokes to handling complex litigation, Matthew shares his expertise and insights into a field few fully understand.

Q: Welcome to Raising the Bar. Can you tell us a little about what you do?
A: I investigate bad outcomes for clients to determine if medical malpractice or negligence played a role in their care. Often, just uncovering what truly happened is as important as helping them recover damages for what they’ve lost.

Q: So even if it doesn’t lead to a lawsuit, your work provides families with closure?
A: Exactly. Many families, especially parents who lose a child, carry misplaced guilt, wondering if they could have done something differently. When we can show them they did everything right, it’s life-changing—whether or not a lawsuit is necessary.

Understanding Stroke: Prevention and Response

Q: You’ve successfully handled numerous medical malpractice cases related to stroke. Before we discuss those, can you explain what people should know about strokes?
A: Stroke is often preventable. Start by seeing your primary care doctor to identify and address risk factors like high blood pressure or obesity. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key.

Q: What about recognizing stroke symptoms?
A: Symptoms often affect one side of the body. You might notice facial drooping, slurred speech, or difficulty staying awake. Some people can only say nonsensical syllables like “ba ba ba,” while others experience weakness or numbness.

Q: What should someone do if they suspect a stroke?
A: Get to a stroke center hospital immediately. There are treatments that can dissolve or physically remove the clot causing the stroke, but time is critical. There’s a saying: “Time lost is brain lost.” Delaying treatment can result in permanent damage.

Q: Are there many attorneys specializing in medical malpractice and stroke litigation?
A: No, there aren’t many who do this kind of work. While some advertise, very few have the expertise to take a case from start to finish.

Q: How long have you been handling these types of cases?
A: I started working on my first medical malpractice case in 1988 and have been focused on this area ever since. Over the years, I’ve also handled cases involving legal malpractice where lawyers mishandled medical malpractice claims.
