Raising the Bar with Christine Michel
In this edition of Raising the Bar, host Alan Picker welcomes Christine Michele, a remarkable attorney leading both the family law and criminal law departments at Terrell Hogan Law. With extensive trial experience and a deep commitment to her clients, Christine stands out as a trusted advocate during life’s most challenging moments. In this Q&A, Christine shares her insights, approach, and passion for the law.

Q: Welcome, Christine! To start, can you tell us what family law entails?
A: Family law covers everything involving family matters—divorces, child support cases, paternity cases, and guardianships. It also includes probate matters like estates, wills, and trusts when someone passes away.

Q: Does family law frequently go to trial?
A: Oh yes, it does. I’ve handled about 80 family law trials and even more in other areas. My trial experience gives clients confidence because I’ve been through this process many times. I can guide them through the complexities of their case while advocating effectively in court.

Q: Why is it important to have a trial-tested attorney for family law cases?
A: When families are breaking up, emotions run high, and the stakes—custody, alimony, child support—are significant. Having someone experienced in trial work can make all the difference. I know the judges, opposing attorneys, and the courtroom dynamics, which helps me set realistic expectations and prepare thoroughly for each case.

Q: Let’s talk about your criminal law practice. What kinds of cases do you handle?
A: I handle everything from misdemeanors to murder trials. For example, one recent murder case took four years to prepare and bring to trial. Criminal law often involves people at their lowest points, so they need someone who knows the system and can fight for them.

Q: You mentioned being on the appointment wheel. Can you explain what that is?
A: The appointment wheel includes attorneys approved to handle cases where the public defender or regional conflict counsel has a conflict of interest. Judges only select attorneys with proven trial experience for this list, and about half of my cases currently come from these appointments.

Q: It sounds like both family and criminal law involve life-changing situations. How do you manage the stress?
A: Surprisingly, I’m not a very stressed person! I think that’s why I’m well-suited to these high-pressure areas of law. When I want to unwind, I watch baseball—I’m a huge Cubs fan—and coach my son’s Little League team. Coaching him is a joy, and it’s a great way to spend quality time together.

Q: What sets your practice apart?
A: At Terrell Hogan, clients work directly with me, not just my staff. I personally handle every aspect of their case, from drafting documents to representing them in court. I even provide my cell number to clients for emergencies because I want to ensure they always have access to me.

Q: How can viewers contact you for family or criminal law matters?
A: Call me at (904) 632-2424 or visit the Terrell Hogan Law website. When you call, you’ll speak directly with me, and I’ll personally handle your case from start to finish.

Conclusion
Christine Michel’s dual expertise in family and criminal law makes her a standout advocate for clients facing some of life’s most difficult challenges. Whether you need help with a divorce, a custody battle, or a criminal defense case, Christine’s dedication and experience can provide the support you need.
