U.S. Senators Ed Markey and Richard Blumenthal have urged an expanded recall of vehicles with Takata airbags. Investigators are scrutinizing whether the airbags could discharge shrapnel as happened with the older airbags. Almost 34 million vehicles have been recalled for defective airbags.
Takata airbags have been blamed for eight deaths and over 100 injuries from airbag shrapnel. The side airbag concern was triggered after a crash between a 2015 VW Tiguan SUV and a deer.
