IKEA Recalling 27 Million Chests and Dressers for Due to Tip-over Deaths

IMALM 6-drawer chest.KEA is recalling 27 million chest and dressers because they can tip over if they aren’t anchored to walls.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission made the announcement after two children died after IKEA’s chests fell on them.
The recall is not actually a recall, but should be considered a repair.  Customers should not return the furniture, but instead they should should order or pick up free wall anchoring kits for the affected chests and dressers.
The CPSC is recommending that consumers immediately stop using all IKEA children’s chests and dressers taller than 23 ½ inches and adult chests and dressers taller than 29 ½ inches, unless they are securely anchored to the wall. IKEA’s free wall anchoring kit should be used to secure MALM and other IKEA chests and dressers to the wall. There are approximately 7 million MALM chests and 20 million other IKEA chests and dressers are part of this recall/repair program.
To receive a free wall-anchoring kit, consumers can visit an IKEA store, register here, or call toll-free (888) 966-4532.
Every day, we represent victims of personal injury and wrongful death as they seek justice, and lawsuits we have pursued have resulted in safety changes. Sadly, many of those changes came after someone was injured. We believe it is vital to try to help prevent injuries and deaths. That’s why we will continue publish recalls information about defective and dangerous products.
