Child Passenger Safety Week – Car Seat Safety

Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 13. Many times, deaths and injuries can be prevented by proper use of car seats, boosters and seat belts. On average, two children younger than 13 were killed per day in 2016 while riding in cars, SUVs, pickups or vans. Car seats and boosters provide protection for infants and children in a crash. That’s why it’s so important to choose and use the right car seat correctly every time your child is in the car. Events such as Child Passenger Safety Week, September 17-23, 2018, help adults select the right seat for the children they love and care for.

Is My Child as Safe as Possible in the Car?

Of the many questions you ask yourself every day, “Is my child as safe as possible in the car?” should be number one on your list. The answer means all the difference. Child safety is our number one priority.

Children are fragile and therefore much more vulnerable in a car crash than an adult. They count on us to protect and keep them safe. Car seats are a good start, but making sure your child is in the right seat for their size and age, that they are buckled in correctly and the seat is installed securely in your car is vital.

Research shows car seats decrease the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers in cars, and 58 percent and 59 percent for infants and toddlers in SUVs, pickups and vans.

Installing a Car Seat

If you are unsure about how to install a car seat, follow this link to locate a Certified Child Passenger Safety technician in your area. The service that the technicians offer is available year-round, by appointment, and is usually free of charge. Technicians can help parents and caregivers determine if their children are ready to move from rear-facing to forward-facing seats, from forward-facing seats to booster seats, or from booster seats to seat belts. The technicians can also help make sure that your car seat is registered so that you’ll be notified in case your car seat is recalled. At Terrell • Hogan, protecting families from accidents and injury is what we do. Car seats save lives.
