Q: You’re often referred to as a “bike lawyer.” What does that mean?
A: In the U.S., over 50 million people ride bicycles, and nearly every household has at least one bike. Unfortunately, this also leads to thousands of bicycle crashes and injuries each year. I realized there wasn’t a dedicated lawyer in North Florida specializing in defending the rights of cyclists, so I combined my love for cycling with my legal expertise to fill that gap. My focus is on representing cyclists who have been injured or involved in accidents.
Q: What’s unique about representing cyclists in Florida?
A: Cyclists in Florida have the same legal rights to use the roads as motorists. However, many people, including law enforcement and judges, don’t fully understand the specific laws protecting cyclists. Florida’s roads tend to be high-speed and motorist-centric, which can make them dangerous for cyclists. Statistically, when a vehicle hits a cyclist at speeds over 45 mph, the outcome is often fatal. My role involves not only understanding these laws but also advocating for safer conditions and educating others about cyclists’ rights.
Q: How significant is the need for bicycle accident attorneys in Florida?
A: The need is immense. Florida leads the nation in bicycle fatalities, and on average, 18 cyclists are involved in accidents daily in the state. These incidents often involve serious injuries or death. At Terrell Hogan, I head the Bicycle Accident Litigation Group, working to support cyclists during some of the most challenging times in their lives.
Q: Do you handle other types of cases besides bicycle accidents?
A: Yes, I also handle auto and trucking accident cases, but my specialty and passion lie in representing cyclists. Anything related to road safety is a significant part of my practice.
Q: How did your passion for cycling develop?
A: I’ve been cycling since childhood. Growing up in a small Indiana town, I loved the independence my bike gave me. That passion has stayed with me, and I’ve been fortunate to ride in various countries and across the U.S. When I’m not riding, I enjoy paddleboarding with my dog, Chu, who often joins me on the board.
Q: What community work have you been involved in related to cycling?
A: I’m proud to serve on the board responsible for the Emerald Trail, a 30-mile urban shared-use path in Jacksonville. This trail will transform downtown Jacksonville, much like the Beltline in Atlanta. I’ve also worked on other initiatives to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians, advocating for better infrastructure like bike lanes and sidewalks.
Q: How can someone contact you if they need help with a case?
A: Clients can reach me through the Terrell Hogan Law office at (904) 632-2424 or through our website. I also provide my personal cell phone to clients for direct access, even on weekends or late at night. I’m happy to answer questions, whether they’re about legal matters or general cycling laws.
