Matthew Sowell

Attorney

Matthew Sowell is one of Florida’s foremost medical malpractice attorneys, with over 35 years of experience representing victims of medical negligence. He is one of only 16 Florida attorneys nationally certified by the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys for expertise in medical malpractice law and is Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by The Florida Bar, a distinction held by only 5% of Florida attorneys.

Matt’s exceptional qualifications, including recognition as a Florida Super Lawyer and an AV Preeminent Peer Rated Attorney, make him a trusted advocate for clients facing life-changing injuries caused by medical negligence.

A Focus on Complex Medical Malpractice Cases

Matt dedicates his practice exclusively to victims of medical malpractice, with a particular focus on cases involving cardiovascular and neurological injuries such as brain injuries, stroke, and paralysis. His passion for stroke litigation led him to found the Stroke Litigation Group of the American Association for Justice, the nation’s largest organization of trial attorneys. Through this group, Matt has trained attorneys across the country on how to successfully advocate for stroke victims.

Over the course of his career, Matt has secured numerous multimillion-dollar verdicts and settlements for clients in complex medical malpractice cases, helping individuals and families recover from devastating injuries caused by medical negligence.

A Lifelong Commitment to Justice

A sixth-generation Floridian, Matt has spent his entire career standing up for individuals harmed by professional negligence and corporate misconduct. After earning his law degree from the University of Alabama, Matt began his career researching banking law and creditor’s rights under the mentorship of his law school’s Dean.

He then joined the commercial litigation group at one of Jacksonville’s largest law firms, where he developed a keen interest in prosecuting professional malpractice cases. This early experience shaped his dedication to advocating for clients affected by the failings of medical professionals and institutions.

Recognition and Leadership

Matt’s expertise and dedication have earned him widespread recognition, including:

  • National certification by the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys in medical malpractice law.
  • Board Certification in Civil Trial Law by The Florida Bar.
  • Florida Super Lawyer and AV Preeminent Peer Rating honors.

As a leader in medical malpractice litigation, Matt has authored articles and delivered presentations to trial lawyer groups nationwide, sharing his knowledge and strategies for representing victims of medical negligence.

Family and Community

Matt’s commitment to helping others extends beyond his legal career. He and his wife Sara, an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, have been married for over 35 years. Sara works alongside Matt, helping evaluate many of the complex medical malpractice cases he handles. Together, they are proud parents to two daughters and grandparents to their grandson.

When he’s not advocating for his clients, Matt enjoys spending time with his family and remaining active in his community.
