Important Holiday Reminder About Toy Safety Hazards

For years we have been determined to get the word out on toy safety, toy recalls, and how important it is that the toys you buy are safe for the children you love. The CPSC’s toy recall statistics show that since 2008 the number of toys recalled has decreased and retailers and consumers alike are more attentive to the toys they purchase.
However, it’s November, the ads are running and Holiday shopping has begun, and we’re helping alert consumers about dangerous toys and how to check to see if the toys you buy are safe. Recalls are easy to miss; that is why we feel it is so important to repeat them.
Even though a toy is on the shelf or on the internet, it does not mean it is safe for your child.  How to know if a toy is safe for your child.
Recalls
The U.S. Consumer Product (CPSC) is a great place to check for recalled toys and children’s products that pose safety threats. Before purchasing any toy, you can simply check the recall page to see if the toy is known to pose a hazard. These days, you can check it on your mobile phone, right there in the store .
Because the safety of children is so important, many consumer groups sample toys and put out lists of the toys that they consider unsafe. Safe Kids’ website is an excellent resource for age appropriate toy safety and recalls information. For World Against Toys Causing Harm (W.A.T.C.H.) list of 2015 ten worst toys.
Second Hand/Thrift Stores/Yard Sales
It’s not a good deal if you buy a recalled, dangerous toy or children’s product from a yard sale or thrift store. Be sure to check before you purchase any item for a child. This is especially important with older baby cribs, baby walkers, car seats, strollers and high chairs. It is not only defective toys that can be dangerous; other products such as furniture, clothing and car seats should also be checked for recalls. Resale Thrift Store Safety Information can be found here.
Toys and children’s products are recalled weekly. Unfortunately, that means you could have a recalled product. The CPSC recommends to regularly check for recalls everywhere there are children and toys (homes, daycare, churches). It’s a good idea to find out if your childcare provider is checking too.
Holiday shopping can be stressful. We hope that by providing information about recalls of defective and dangerous toys, it will help prevent injuries to the youngsters in your life.
