New 2012 Distracted Driving Data Released

The best way to end distracted driving is to educate about the real dangers it poses. As Jacksonville auto accident attorneys, we see in our clients’ cases the injuries and deaths distracted driving causes. (It is rare that someone intentionally causes a car crash, although some just fail to drive safely for the conditions; usually some distraction, even momentary, is the culprit.) Because of what we have seen and learned we are concerned about highway safety. For that reason, we educate drivers about the serious dangers of driving while distracted through articles on our website and Distracted Driving Awareness presentations we make at schools, non-profit organizations and businesses.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) has released updated 2012 statistics and facts. The number of people killed in identifiably distraction-caused motor vehicle crashes remained above three thousand, 3,328 compared with 3,360 people in 2011. However, there has been a 9% increase in the number of people injured in distracted-affected crashes: from 387,000 people in 2011 to 421,000 people in 2012.
Also of particular concern is the fact that in America, at any given daylight time, 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or other electronic devices while driving, a number that has remained constant. Obviously, too many drivers do not know or appreciate the serious dangers of driving distracted.
All distractions endanger driver, passenger, and pedestrian safety. A driver’s attention must be focused on the primary task of driving. Multitasking may seem to be the way of the world now, but multitasking behind the wheel is a recipe for disaster. Please share these facts with your family, friends, and others. The life you save could be your own, or theirs!
