The National Trans­portation Safety Board (NTSB) has called for a ban nationwide on the use of cell phones and text messaging devices while driving. This recom­men­dation is the most compre­hensive issued by the NTSB, which has increasingly sought to limit the use of portable electronic devices. The recom­men­dation would outlaw non-emergency cell phone usage and texting by any driver of any vehicle on the road. However, it would not apply to hands-free devices or to passengers in a vehicle. Many states already have laws prohibiting cell phones and text messaging devices while driving.
