See if Your Vehicle has Been Recalled with NHTSA VIN Search Tool

You can now use a vehicle’s identification number to detect open or unrepaired safety recalls with a new search tool created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released by the starting today. We previously reported that NHTSA was working on this last year and are pleased to announce that it is now up and running.  NHTSA Press Release
The free recall search tool is available on NHTSA’s website. Consumers can enter a vehicle’s VIN to find out if the vehicle has any open, unrepaired recalls and whether a fix is available. “Safety is our highest priority, and an informed consumer is one of our strongest allies in ensuring recalled vehicles are repaired,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “Starting today car owners, shoppers, and renters can find out if a specific vehicle has a safety defect that needs to be fixed – using our free online tool.”
In the first six months of 2014, over 37.5 million vehicles were recalled in the United States, more than in any prior year. The NHTSA search tool includes light vehicles dating back 15 years. After the VIN is entered into the search engine, open recalls are noted in red text. Vehicles without open recalls, or recalls that already have been repaired will not garner any search results.
Also, NHTSA has now required all major light vehicle and motorcycle manufacturers to provide VIN search capability for uncompleted recalls on their own websites and the data must be updated weekly. NHTSA’s VIN look-up tool relies on information from all major automakers, and regularly updated information from the automakers is critical to the efficacy of the search tool.
Every day, we at Terrell • Hogan represent victims of personal injury and wrongful death as they seek justice, but helping prevent auto accidents and injuries is also a constant focus. Lawsuits we have pursued for deserving victims have prompted safety changes, but that came after the accidents and injuries and deaths happened. We think it’s important to try to find ways to prevent injuries and wrongful deaths. That’s why we feel it’s important to help spread this important information about NHTSA’s VIN look-up tool.
