More Vehicles Added to Defective Takata Air Bag Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) has added more vehicles to the current recall of Takata airbags.  To date, the Takata recall involves over 23 million air bag inflators from 11 different automakers.
The recall has become more complicated. According to NHTSA, some of these vehicles have been covered by previous recalls and some may be covered by previous driver’s-side recalls. In some vehicles, owners are going to be asked to take their vehicle in twice.
The recall of Takata airbags is because when they are exposed to high heat and humidity for long periods, the ammonium nitrate airbag inflators can cause a reaction that propels metal shrapnel into occupants as the airbags deploy.
