After two children’s deaths, the Ace Bayou Corp., of New Orleans, La. has recalled approximately 2.2 million of its bean bag chairs. The bean bag chairs are hazardous because the zippers can be opened and children can crawl inside, get trapped, and suffocate or choke on the polystyrene foam beads inside. Both children died after suffocating from lack of air and inhaling the foam beads and were found inside the chairs.
The recalled bean bag chairs have two zippers; one for the exterior cover and the other directly underneath the first zipper opening to the polystyrene foam beads. They were sold in a variety of shapes (round and L-shaped), sizes ( round: 30, 32, and 40 inches diameter: L-shaped: 18 inches wide by 30 inches deep by 30 inches high), materials (vinyl and fabric), and colors. There is a printed tag sewn into the cover seam which states “ACE BAYOU CORP.” They were sold at several stores including retail giants Walmart and Amazon before July 2013 for between $30 and $100.
Consumers should check to see if the zippers on their bean bag chairs are open able and if so, take them IMMEDIATELY away from their children.
