Man Dies in Wreck While Using Tesla Autopilot System

A man driving a Tesla Model S was the first person in the U.S. to die in a wreck involving a car in self-driving mode, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
According to the Associated Press, a 40-year-old man died in a crash on May 7 in Williston, Florida after his car’s camera did not activate the brakes when a tractor trailer turned left in front of him. The man died at the scene. NHTSA is investigating.
According to a blog post by Tesla,  the brake was not applied because neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky. Tesla reports this is the first known death in more than 130 million miles where Autopilot was activated.
