Donation of Reflective Gloves Helps Keep Crossing Guards Safe

Zero. That’s the number of crossing guards and students injured during the Duval County 2013 school year. The 300 crossing guards who serve Duval County elementary schools oversaw 915,000 street crossings by individual students last year without incident.
That fact was celebrated at the JSO’s 21st Annual School Crossing Guard and Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon held at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge.
Sheriff John Rutherford thanked the crossing guards for protecting our kids and keeping them safe, and for putting their own lives at risk in doing so.
The Sheriff also thanked Attorney Wayne Hogan, president of the Terrell • Hogan law firm, for sponsoring the luncheon and for the third year in a row, donating reflective gloves to help keep the crossing guards safe as they do their important work.
Several hundred attended the luncheon. Awards were given for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years of service. Please remember the next time you see a crossing guard, take a good look at all of the things that crossing guard does for the children they protect. They truly put their lives at risk on a daily basis. Be sure to thank them because being a crossing guard takes a special person to do the job.
